The worst thing you can do is nothing!

Seniors and Tech

As you know I have been teaching seniors how to use tech for over 20 years. During that time I have noticed something. Seniors love to say they are "Not Tech Savvy". They are very dedicated to the concept. But in reality they are just afraid of making mistakes.

Whoever Makes the most mistakes Wins

The big difference between Kids and Seniors is not that the kids were born with it. It is that kids start making mistake on computers before they understand the concept of consequences. So in a Childs mind it is either ... that worked ... or that did not work. They honestly don't care or understand the consequences of throwing a computer because they lost a game (We repair a lot of iPads because kids damage them in a fit of rage).  This makes their brains a sponge of information. They learn from their mistakes so quickly everyone seems to think they are computer geniuses (Not at all true)

Seniors on the other hand are so terrified at making a mistake that they will often make false consequences to fit their narrative.  Some times those crazy concepts are something they saw on TV or a scary ad on Facebook. Or maybe it was they learned computers from the IT department at work who are notorious for explaining things badly.

IF you don't make a mistake your are not trying hard enough.

I remember I was in a martial arts class learning how to spin a staff. The rules were that if you dropped the staff you had to do 10 pushups. At the end of the class He asked each of us how many times we dropped the staff. When it came to me I proudly said "I did not drop the staff once" .. His reply surprised me . " Then you are not trying hard enough... you need to be able to risk making a mistake or you will never learn ... Give me 10 Pushups"

It  was true I was so worried about making a mistake that it was taking me longer to learn. This is true with a lot of seniors. They stress so much about making a mistake that they refuse to push the button that will obviously solve their problem.

Make mistakes ... the worst you can do is nothing!

With the understanding that mistakes are ok ... this will allow you to learn from them! Doing nothing means that you will always be bad at computers.
